Starlink adds a $40 Router Mini and cuts the Gen 3 router to $80
In May 2025 Starlink launched a $40 Router Mini (Wi-Fi 6, WAN + LAN) and cut its Gen 3 mesh router to $80. Background on cheap mesh nodes and where they fall short on farms.

What changed
DISHYtech reported on 2025-05-07 that Starlink had launched the Router Mini for $40 in its shop and cut its Gen 3 router from $120 to $80. The Router Mini is dual-band Wi-Fi 6, covers about 1,200 sq ft, and has one WAN port and one LAN port. The Gen 3 router is tri-band Wi-Fi 6 with about 3,200 sq ft of coverage.
DISHYtech also noted that newer Starlink routers it bought were labeled made in Vietnam, where earlier ones were made in the USA.

Who it affects
Starlink households that want more Wi-Fi coverage using Starlink’s own mesh. Starlink routers mesh only with Starlink routers.
What it means for your setup
A cheap mesh node is tempting for the barn, but wireless mesh between buildings usually fails. Distance and metal walls kill the wireless backhaul. Our mesh across buildings page explains why.
A Router Mini can work well in the barn if you feed it by cable or bridge. That’s a wired mesh node. Run buried Cat6 or a bridge to the barn and plug the Router Mini into it for Wi-Fi inside. Inside a metal building, put it where people and devices are, not by the door.
One more point from the reporting: DISHYtech noted that Starlink routers then faced tariffs as imports from Vietnam, and wondered whether prices would hold. We don’t track router prices here. For a barn, the router model matters less than the backhaul. Any Starlink router node plugged into a cable from the house gives the barn the full speed of the connection; the same node trying to reach the house wirelessly across a yard usually gives you a weak, dropping link.
What to do now
- If you’re thinking of a Router Mini for the barn, plan the wired or bridged backhaul first.
- Remember it needs its own power outlet. It isn’t powered over Ethernet.
What stays the same
- Starlink routers mesh only with Starlink routers, up to three nodes per Starlink’s support page.
- Bypass mode turns off Starlink Wi-Fi and mesh.
What we don’t know yet
- This is background. Router prices may have changed since, and Router 4 was announced in September 2026.
