Which one
- Cellular: anywhere with a little signal. Sends photos (some send short video) over its own plan. Check signal at the spot first.
- Wi-Fi: within range of an access point you put out there. Fine by the barn or a pen that already has a link. Not worth building a bridge for one trail camera.
- SD card only: no signal and no network. You still drive out, but it costs nothing monthly.
If you do extend Wi-Fi out there
It’s a bridge to a pole or building near the spot, plus an outdoor access point ($69.95–$219). That only pays off if several cameras, sensors or people will use it.
When this is the wrong choice
- No cell signal at the spot: cellular won’t send anything. Use SD cards, or a Wi-Fi camera near a networked building.
- You only check the camera a few times a season: an SD-card camera is the cheapest.
Questions people ask
Can trail cameras use Starlink?
Not directly. A cellular trail camera uses its own cell signal. A Wi-Fi trail camera needs Wi-Fi where it sits, which means extending your network out there with a bridge and an outdoor access point. Starlink just feeds the house.
Do cellular trail cameras need a plan?
Yes, from the camera maker or a carrier, depending on the model. Check the plan cost before you buy the camera.
