Gate and well cameras with no power nearby

The gate is half a mile out and there’s no outlet. Two ways to watch it: a camera with its own cell data and solar panel, or extending your network out there.

Quick answer

If a phone gets good signal at the gate, use a solar LTE camera ($94.99–$279.99 with panel, plus a monthly data plan). If there’s no signal, or you want several cameras there, extend your network with a bridge, which needs power at the gate.

Before you buy an LTE camera

  1. Stand at the spot with phones on different carriers and note the bars. Pick the carrier with the best signal.
  2. Check the camera works on that carrier and what plan it needs.
  3. Face the panel south (in the US), clear of shade at midday, angled so snow slides off.
  4. Mount the camera out of reach and lock the SIM tray if it has one.

When this is the wrong choice

  • No phone gets signal at the gate.
  • You want three or more cameras at one spot: a bridge and a small switch costs less over time.
  • You need to see the camera live all day: battery cameras sleep between events to save power.

Questions people ask

Can a solar camera at the gate use my Starlink?

Only if something carries the network out to it: a bridge radio at the gate (which needs power too) or a cable. Most gate cameras far from the house use their own cellular data instead.

Does an LTE camera need a data plan?

Yes, each camera needs its own SIM and plan. That monthly cost is why LTE stops making sense once you have several cameras in one spot.

How do I size solar for the camera?

Battery cameras usually come with, or offer, a small matched panel. Use the maker’s panel and follow its placement advice. Sizing solar for the dish itself is a different, bigger job; our sister site Starlink Mini USA covers dish power.
