What changed
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission posted recall 26-712 on 2026-08-20 for Goal Zero YETI 3000X portable power stations: silver and black units of about 92 pounds on a rolling cart with yellow handles, with “YETI 3000X” on a nameplate under the lid. The hazard, word for word: “The recalled power station’s circuit board can overheat, posing a risk of serious injury from fire and burn hazards.”
Goal Zero had four reports of the power stations catching fire, overheating and smoking, and no injuries, per the notice. They were sold at REI and online at Costco.com, Backcountry.com, Goalzero.com and others from May 2020 through August 2025.

Who it affects
Anyone with a YETI 3000X, including farms that use one to keep the router, a bridge, a barn switch or cameras running through outages, or to power a test kit on land. Other YETI models aren’t named in the notice.
What it means for your setup
A large power station often sits in a barn, a shop or a pump house running network gear unattended, which is where an overheating unit is most dangerous. Stop using it until the firmware repair is installed.
The remedy is a firmware update, so you don’t need to send the unit back. Once it’s updated, nothing changes about how you power the far end of a link; our planner lists the power each method needs at the barn. Sizing a battery for the dish itself is a different job that we don’t cover here.
What to do now
- From the CPSC notice, word for word: “Consumers should stop using the power stations immediately and install the free repair in the form of a firmware update available through the Goal Zero application or contact Goal Zero for firmware installation at no cost.”
- Goal Zero contact, per the notice: 888-794-6250, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. MT, Monday through Friday, or support@goalzero.com.
- If the unit runs network gear in an outbuilding, move that load to another power source until the update is done.
What stays the same
- Other Goal Zero YETI models, which the notice doesn’t name.
- How much power bridges, switches and cameras need at the far end.
What we don’t know yet
- Which firmware version contains the fix. The notice doesn’t give a version number.
